This active group of children between the ages of five and twelve spend the most of their day in school. After school they like to relax with their friends in a less structured environment where they are more in control of the activities they choose. They judge an activity by its “fun index,” so play is an important component of our program. Play fosters cognitive development while enhancing social development and at this age children are eager to form social connections. They love making friends and being a friend. By now they are learning to be more in control of themselves and their immediate environment and most can take care of their personal needs. They will observe rules, enjoy organized activities and welcome a challenge.
The After School Club is housed in two large classrooms on the second floor of our centre. Children arrive from school by bus and the After School teacher is there to meet the bus and ensure all children have arrived on schedule. Before school care is also available to those parents who need to be at work earlier than school hours. Children can be dropped off at the centre as early as 6:45AM and staff will ensure that all children get on the correct bus. Full day care is also available on storm days, PD days, March break.
Children begin arriving around two pm and are provided a prepackaged snack and beverage. After snack, children can enjoy a wide variety of activities in either classroom. The block corner is popular and always busy while others prefer to play in the sand and water tables. Table top games, lego, puzzles and the computer are always available and music, craft corner or painting will challenge the budding artists. Playground space is available every day, weather permitting, and on Monday and Wednesday children will have access to the city recreation centre which is close by.
